Beethoven Residence - West Los Angeles, CA

This contemporary, statement home is defined by the graceful new “butterfly” roof that expands the bedrooms spaces to the east and west, allowing for soaring ceilings and dramatic skylights in the spaces below.

While technically a remodel and addition of a second story to an existing small 2 bedroom/1 bath house, the Beethoven Residence is effectively a brand new, 3 bedroom/3 bath house.

The exterior palette was designed to be both beautiful and require minimal maintenance with dark anodized aluminum windows and a dark grey field of fiber cement board siding accented with red metal siding at the entry/stair tower and smaller infill of clear, knotty cedar.

Inside, the formerly, very small 2 bedroom/ 1 bath house was transformed into a contemporary, statement home with 3 bedrooms / 3 baths and an open floor plan. The first floor has one bedroom, which will be used as a media room, in the front of the home. The spacious entry flows into the open living, dining and kitchen in the rear of the home. The living room is able to completely open up to the outdoor dining deck through a 5-panel, bi-folding door.

The new staircase is a central focus of the design, with an integrated custom walnut bookshelf in the center of the switchback and three large skylights above. Upstairs are two more bedrooms, both en suite, and a large laundry/craft room. The new master bedroom suite overhangs the existing structure below creating a covered outdoor dining room space.

Floor Area: 1,900 sf

Construction Budget: $300/sf

Completion Date: 2017
